County Service of Remembrance
&
Commitment To World Peace

Over 25 years ago the then Lord Lieutenant of Powys, Col. Lyon Corbett-Winder and Rev. Dick Jones, County Padre and Secretary of Montgomery County Committee, Royal British Legion came up with the idea of a "County Service of Remembrance & Commitment To World Peace" to be held in early summer mainly to maintain interest in the work of RBL and to not just rely on the November 11th traditional celebrations.
Montgomery Parish Church is the site of the "County Book of
Remembrance" in which all the names of those people from Montgomeryshire who have fallen in conflicts are recorded.
At a service which is held in the Church every Friday
morning a page of the book is turned. This, up until last December, was carried out by 2 old comrades. Major, Terry Boundy and Mr Arthur Tanner. Sadly, Major. Boundy died in December but Arthur, now nearing 90 still keeps up the tradition.
On top of Town Hill, lies the site of the County War Memorial which is
dedicated to all who have fallen, men and women, in the service of their country. The renovation and updating of
this memorial became Major. Boundy"s obsession and thankfully he lived to see his objective reached. In the early years the parade marched up to the memorial but in latter years, time taking its toll we now just have the parade through the town.

The event is in the hand of the Lord Lieutenant, currently The Hon Mrs Shan Legge-Bourke LVO who is an enthusiastic supporter of the event.
The County Secretary RBL circulates all RBL Branches in Powys asking for their attendance along with their Standard Bearers.
The Secretary to The Lord Lieutenant sends out an invitation on her
behalf to all High Sheriffs; Deputy Lieutenants, Mayors, Chairmen of Councils and all local dignitaries.
