Montgomery Wales
Destination Montgomery - Project update 2020

It’s been three years since Arwain awarded Montgomery Town Council £49,000 for the Destination Montgomery project, the aim of which was to add to the sustainability of Montgomery. Since then the steering group, supported by a dedicated development officer, and with participation from the community, has been working hard to achieve that aim.

The first major achievement was in 2018 with the creation of 11 Montgomery walking & Cycling trails, two of which incorporate family friendly quizzes, along with the installation of 12 geocaches, a type of treasure hunt. At the end of 2018, following several months of hard work by a team of volunteers, the new Montgomery Wales website was launched, providing a one-stop-shop for locals and visitors to find out more about Montgomery past and present.

2019 saw the reopening of the Town Hall following its refurbishment so the focus was on promoting and supporting various events and performances, working closely with local groups and committees. A lot of effort has also been put into revitalising the Thursday market and promoting local food producers and other traders.

The project was due to finish this spring but, due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdown affecting what can be done over the summer, the deadline has been extended into the autumn. As well as giving us time to finalise some plans, and to look at securing ongoing funding to build on what has been achieved so far, this will enable us to do what we can to ensure Montgomery is ready to welcome back visitors when it is safe to do so.
