The five cycle rides based on Montgomery will provide you with beautiful views of the dramatic
countryside of the Welsh borders. The lanes are free of heavy traffic and therefore if you need to push up any hill it is easy to do so!
Route 1 – Hendomen and Dolydd Hafren nature reserve: This route, local to Montgomery, gives an exceptional view over the town and later on of the castle. An extension allows a visit to a very interesting nature reserve next to the river Severn.
Route 2 – Abermule: A very attractive valley route is followed by a longish climb from Abermule. However this is rewarded by truly fantastic views as far as Cadr Idris from the flat cycle ride on the top of the hill. Don’t
miss this one.
Route 3 – Pentreheyling and Churchstoke: An easy route with only one short sharp hill. There is a water mill near Bacheldre, which produces flour, and there are two opportunities to see the impressive mound of Offa’s Dyke. The lanes are beautiful and very rustic.
Route 4 – Abermule and Bettws Cedewain: Except for two short sharp hills between Abermule and the B4389 this route is relatively easy. The views along the way are very attractive and there are the river Severn,
Montgomery canal and Dolforwyn Castle to visit. Newtown can also be visited via a traffic free disused canal and riverside path.
Route 5 – Welshpool: Apart from a climb past Powis castle grounds this route is relatively easy. Welshpool and Berriew offer amenities and museums. Powis castle is a fascinating National Trust property and the gardens are superb. Check opening times.

Hendomen. Standing alongside the narrow lane which links the minor roads B4385 and B4388, leading out of the old borough of Montgomery, is the site of a motte and bailey timber castle which played a very significant part in the history, formation and naming of the present day county of Montgomeryshire. A little to the east of this site is Offa’s Dyke, running from North to South, a man made feature which here represents the boundary between Shropshire and Montgomeryshire and also the national boundary between England and Wales.

Powis Castle Powis Castle and gardens, near Welshpool was built around 1200 and houses a beautiful collection of textiles, bronzes, ivory and jade from Powis CastleIndia, and are displayed for visitors in the Clive (of India) Museum. The castle is medieval and was built by Welsh princes. The castle has been added to by generations of the Clive and Herbet families.
The Coach House is home to the state coach used by the Earls of Powis, and can be seen by visitors. The World Famous 17th century terrace garden is laid out with heavy influences from the Italian and French styles and has a collection of rare plants in herbaceous borders.
